A daily dose of Ellie, Calvin, or both!

I never thought I'd say

I never thought I'd say, "Calvin, headphones aren't for putting in the toilet" or other similar phrases. I didn't really have to with Ellie, she wasn't a fan of the toilet during playtime. Boys...

He got sent home from daycare because he has a rash starting to develop on his face so we have a dr appointment this afternoon. Joy.

So apparently he (and likely I) have hand foot and mouth. Happy joy.

He's hiding from the doctor...

Grumpy man

He wasn't happy that our walk out of school didn't go past the fish tanks.

I'm not sure why I can't get photos to upload from yesterday. Sorry.

Mummies!

It was a weekend for three of us while Nick is off in Chicago. We had fun, but learned picking dinner is not a democratic event with a 6-year old and that one extrovert (Calvin) mixed with two introverts makes for a long Sunday afternoon.

We spent Saturday at the natural history museum and a special mummy exhibit. Ellie has been reading a fiction and a non-fiction book about mummies and pyramids and so it was cool to see hieroglyphs and actual mummies in real life. Calvin enjoyed seeing the stuffed mammals in the mammal hall, But wasn't too keen on the dinosaurs.

After the museum we went and hung out with friends and ate ice cream.

And yesterday I scooped up the kids and headed up to the foothills to see the lunar eclipse.

To school

Both kids on their way to school.

It was free dress day. No sure why Calvin is showing off his belly.

It was movie night and 90 degrees when the sun went down at said movie night. We left early and E had a fit. Cal didn't fall asleep until we got home at 8:30...tomorrow is gonna be fun!

Torture

So my personal version of torture is having to eat bad pizza, drinking from a kid sized cup, stressing that my strong willed toddler won't sit in a high chair or on the booth seat, my daughter running around like a crazy kid but I can't really watch her because I'm worried about the toddler, scary and bad animatronics, being forced to listen to kids singing bad top 40 songs, begging, demanding and fits from my daughter who knows better, small talk with people I barely know.

So yeah, school fundraiser night at Chuck E Cheese...BY MYSELF!

It was horrible. But at least I convinced E to get tootsie rolls and not plastic garbage.

They had fun.

Passports and paint

Today I had to renew my passport and this being the digital age I opted to take my own passport photo. At least I had several options...

Calvin helped me pick out paint for the master bath. Although with his choice of stripes on stripes in not sure I trust his judgement.

Big Little Man

Calvin thinks he's a big kid. He has rejected high chairs. And he really needs to be "helpful". He insists on helping carry things from the car when we get home. And he helps Ellie read.

They made a friendship banner in school, apparently Calvin had a blast making the handprints though.

Showers!

We used the kids bathtub and shower over the weekend!! So exciting.

Ballet started up again.

We watched the Emmys as a family (only one TV still). Nick said it was work.

I know I have said more than once I am NOT a morning person...but I would wake up early everyday for this little man (well, I guess I have to anyway).

Progress

Yesterday on the way to piano we drive past the high school in our neighborhood. Ellie saw a whole bunch of teens on their phones. We then had this conversation.

Ellie: in High school do you just play on your phone all day?

Me: no, I think they take your phone away if you use it in school.

Ellie: did you ever have your phone taken?

Me: no, but I didn't really have a phone. I mean I had a cell phone but it stayed in the car. And I could only make calls from it...so it wouldn't have been able to use it anyway.

Ellie: your phone didn't have games? How did you take pictures?

Me: no it was just a regular phone.

Ellie: that's not fun.

Me: well grandma and grandpa only had phone that had to stay in their house!

Ellie: WHAT?!?!?!

Progress...

Here is a cute Cal

Back to School Night

Tonight was back to school night at Webster. So Calvin had an extended stay at daycare (which he wasn't keen on) and E joined him at Kids Klub for a taco dinner and an ice cream party (she had a blast). Nick and I headed to school to learn about Es teacher and classroom.

Ellie was proud of her organized desk and told me not to mess it up. She was super excited to have us see her work too. She has enjoyed first grade and I can see why. Her classroom is nice and her teacher is awesome. We are excited for this year!

Play doh

I hate Play Doh. Always have. It stinks. It feels weird. It's gross.

But seeing the kids playing together, even if it's Play Doh, is pretty awesome.

And apparently first graders do algebra with Common Core.

Universal Studios

So Sunday was the last Sunday this fall before ballet starts. So Ellie will have activities on Saturday and Sunday, both pretty much in the middle of the day, so our weekends are more scheduled from now on.

But Sunday we decided to go to Universal Studios. Nick had a free pas for me and He and E have their season passes. I hadn't been to US since the Illini were in the Rose Bowl in like 1872...yeah it was that long ago. About 87% of the rides and attractions I remember have been replaced with rides and attractions from movies I haven't seen.

We had s blast. There was rides and water play and donuts and laughing. Calvin even got to go on some rides. He loved the tram ride, which E really did too (after telling us it was so boring...which I could understand since she had seen approximately 0.004% of the movies and TV that you see props and sets for).

Yesterday

So yesterday was pretty crazy. I flew up to Oakland for a day for work. I didn't get back till late and went right to sleep.

We had an awesome weekend though. I spent a great afternoon with Ellie and her friend at the Huntington. They appreciated art, learned new vocabulary words, and had some free imaginative play together. It was kinda fun to watch them though. At one point E was kinda done with the imagining that they were fairies all the time and wanted to be in the real world and had to tell her friend she didn't want to play.

Tomorrow I'll tell you about Sunday.

Friends and doctors

We picked up Es friend from her school today to help out her parents. The girls played nicely, of course kids ostracizing Calvin. And then we had dinner and a movie, Frozen...of course.

Calvin had his 18 mo visit. The doctor told us to try and get rid of the pacifier and to keep an eye on his language (more words). Cal was well behaved and sat still really studying the doctor and was cooperating. He was curious and reserved with her, very serious. He got two shots and wasn't too happy about that. He weighed in at 26 lbs 12 ounces and 31.5" (for reference, at Es 18 mo spot she was 25 lbs and 31 inches).
