Ellie's physical

Ellie had her well visit this morning. She also didn't have school as it was a pupil-free day.

The physical went well. She is average height and weight weighing in at 55lb and 49 inches. Her growth chart is steady and normal. Doc said she needs more calcium and sunscreen. She also needs a follow-up eye exam.

In other news, I turned Cal's car seat around. He was SO happy to face forward and see more. He said he was excited to see me in the car.

3-year physical

Calvin had his 3-year well visit today. No vaccinations and he got a clear bill of health (besides his asthma and eczema). He is 36" tall and 36 pounds which puts him in the 13th percentile for height and 87th percentile for weight. Pretty typical for him (Ellie was about the same at this age as well).

He's growing normally and healthy. He's feisty and strong. And can ride a bike!!

Home

I'm back from Detroit. Not much to see there, but I do recommend the Ford Museum, it was MUCH more than cars. And the big GM building that dominates the skyline? The tower is a HOTEL! And the inside is chaos to navigate, just saying.

Of course it has been awesome to have Grandma in charge. Breakfast of waffles! Falling asleep on the couch! Dessert!! Clean blinds (okay, that's just for me. Thank you!!)

Tears

I'm at a convention right now. The kids are having to deal with getting back to real life after vacation without me.

There were tears at bedtime.

Vacation Day 5

Our last full day of vacation.

We had a big breakfast followed by some time at the train playground again. We even rode the train again, but not in the boxcar.

The it was off to Mesa for another Cubs game. We had matching shirts. Well the kids did and Nick and I did. It wasn't intentional. Cubs lost but E got her cotton candy and Cal had some fun playing wiffle ball.

After some swimming at the hotel pool we headed to dinner in old town Scottsdale followed by dessert at the famous Sugar Bowl (apparently a favorite of Bill Keane of Family Circus fame)

Vacation Day 4

Today we had no preset plans. So we googled "things to do in Phoenix with kids".

First we headed to Dunkin Donuts. Because, breakfast.

Then we went to the country's newest aquarium which also boasts the largest known (documented) manta ray. It was pretty big. The aquarium also had a carousel of progress thing which was a hoot. Calvin especially was amused by the "ride". We all enjoyed the penguins and sea turtles. There was also a tank of about 10,000 "nemo!".

After lunch we headed to a hiking spot that google said was great for kids. It was the perfect length for Calvin and Ellie got to practice her rock. Limping skills. It was pretty cool.

Driving to a baseball game the other day we saw a playground that had lots of trains and what looked like a little train you could ride. So we googled it and decided it would be a fun place to end the day. We got a train ride and a carousel ride followed by a fun playground.

Of course the kids had to ride in the boxcar, which barely fit an adult. It was fun getting to watch how happy Calvin was.

Vacation Day 3

Today we left the Grand Canyon (too short a trip) and headed back to Phoenix. But not before we visited Bearizona.

Bearizona is a drive-thru wildlife park. It was strange and odd and amazing. There were mountain goats, big horn sheep, bears, wolves, white bison (!), and brown bison. It was intense. There was also a normal zoo where we saw a jaguar and a badger, along with other smaller animals.

The afternoon concluded with swimming and dinner with friends who were also in town. Nick headed to see the Cubs.

Vacation Day 2

Minimal cell service up at the Grand Canyon. So this is late.

Monday we went to another baseball game. It was hot. Like so hot one of us may have succumbed (almost) to heat exhaustion and gotten sick and had to spend a couple innings in first aid being tended to by firefighters. Someone who may also have the lightest hair color. I'm not naming names because that person is sad and embarrassed they got sick. But they recovered and enjoyed the end of the game.

But the Cubs won and we had great seats and Calvin got an Icee.

Tuesday we got up early and drove to the Grand Canyon. We got there early enough to spend hours walking the rim trail (mostly carrying Calvin as he was a bit rambunctious and stressing us out). It is so much more impressive then you can imagine.
