Museum discovery day

A couple weeks ago when Calvin was on spring break he heard an ad for a kids discovery day at the LA museum of natural history on KUSC, the classical music station. Then he heard it again...and he asked to go. So we went. Because for once we had nothing scheduled or planned or had to be done. 

Ellie enjoyed the gems and minerals exhibit seeing the different types of rock (metamorphic, etc) after having just learned about it in school and showing her dad the gold mining exhibit. Calvin liked the dinosaur bones and outside discovery area where he made a “course” for his sister. As the KUSC discovery day there were concerts throughout the museum and an instrument petting zoo. It was Nicks first time to the museum (not sure how that happened...) and so we made sure to see everything. 

MLB Food Fest

Nick got some free tickets to the MLB food festival in LA for Saturday night. Basically all the MLB teams bring a favorite, iconic, or local food to be sampled. You had two hours to eat what you could...more or less.  Ellie thoroughly enjoyed the various pulled pork delights, including Kansas City’s offering of a burger, with pulled pork and an onion ring. We all enjoyed the Boston lobster roll and the churro dog (churro on a donut with ice cream) brought by the Diamondbacks. Then there was the Rangers dilly dog that was a large dill pickle stuffed with a hot dog and deep fried. Ellie tried a Rocky Mountain oyster (Denver) and liked it until she was told what it was. I liked the cheese curds by the Brewers and the Padres fish tacos. The Orioles bright waffle fries and a crab dip. There was a wide assortment of food that was delicious. And there was all sorts of weird stuff meant solely for social media posts (hot dog see saw and a ball pit).

Krispie treats

Calvin: Do you know where I want to travel to?

Me: no, where?

Calvin: Pennsylvania

Me: huh? Why Pennsylvania?

Calvin: I wanna see where pencils are made

He was being serious.

And then he said: so you know how we have strawberry Rice Krispies? It would be really good to make Rice Krispie treats with those. 

I explained we didn’t have marshmallows so we couldn’t do it right then. So he asked his dad to take him to the store to get marshmallows. Ellie and I left for soccer and when we came home the boys had made Rice Krispie treats using strawberry Rice Krispie s.

Showcase

On Monday, Ellie’s after school program had a Showcase that was also a competition with other after school programs at other schools. The kids set up an obstacle course that showed off talents (Ellie dribbled a soccer ball), did a dance, had a science activity that they had to present, art projects, and some other stuff. They had a great time showing off and apparently scored really well with the judges.

A San Francisco minute

I flew up to SF today for a couple of hours...literally. I left LA at 2pm and got home at 10:30. I was up in SF for a talk to AIAsf. Before the presentation, located in the Financial District, I had a few minutes to walk around including a peek at Chinatown, Union Square, and just a little peek-a-boo from the TransAmerica building. 

He’s back at school!

After two weeks Calvin is back at school! I think he was just as excited to see his friends and other adults as we were to have some non-Calvin time. 

He did spend quite a bit of time following instructions and drawing this weekend with great results!

Last day of spring break

Last day of spring break for Calvin. We are counting down the minutes until he goes back to school...kid talks a lot and asks a lot of questions. And he was constantly eating. 

Today during a conference call I had he colored a world map. I think he’s ready to go back as well...

Cals adventures

Calvin and Nick spent a week in IL watching baseball, visiting cousins, seeing friends and eating food. He also got to visit Urbana for the first time.

Special breakfast

This morning Calvin and I went to Starbucks after dropping Ellie off. He rode his scooter and I walked behind him. Then I put him to work dusting while I had a couple of conference calls.
